Streaming drive images over the network

I’ve been doing a fair bit with the lovely Raspberry PI machines recently and if you didn’t know they run off small SD cards. Now once you’ve done all the tweaking to get the system to do what you want, if you’re like me and a little paranoid you might want to make sure you don’t lose the system (bad card, physical damage.. yes I snapped a card once)..

If you’ve got a local NAS or store with a SSH service running here’s a tip

From the PI unit, use the dd command to stream the data right off the disk into a file image on the NAS!

dd if=/dev/root | ssh ” dd of=/sharename/imagename.image”

Bingo!
